About Media-Geek.com

Media-Geek.com was created by Larry A. Compton, a LEVA Certified Forensic Video Analyst and former New York State Peace Officer and Municipal Police Instructor.

Larry helped to establish one of the first law enforcement digital evidence labs in New York State, and is a former member of the NYS Digital Multimedia Evidence Technical Working Group.

Media-Geek.com consists of two areas, public and private.
  • The public area of Media-Geek.com is made available to the general public.
  • The private (members only) area was developed to facilitate secure information sharing among Forensic, multi-media related professionals worldwide.

Member's Area

The secure members area provides a number of tools and features to facilitate communication and information sharing between members. Some of the tools and capabilities currently provided include:

  • Member profiles, which in gist are personal Websites for each member. The member profile displays information about the member, provides an individual file storage/sharing area, serves as their personal blog home page, lists personal connections ("buddies"), lists all of their forum posts, provides the ability to share the profile w/non-members, and more.
  • Our Nearby Members feature geo-tags each member profile, when permitted by the members, and displays a map of nearby members.
  • Member Blogs - Each member is provided with their own blog, complete with a feature-rich WYSIWYG editor that makes creating and managing your blog posts easy. Add images, videos, and other content to your blog posts and style your posts any way you'd like. Members can also syndicate their personal blogs via RSS/XML, and all of their entries are included and syndicated in our community blog too.
  • Private messaging (PM) to communicate between members or groups of members throughout the site.
  • Work Groups to organize, communicate, and more efficiently work with other Media-Geek members. Groups can be created by any Media-Geek member and can be open to all members or private and accessible by invitation only. Groups are a great way to work with and share information with your team, committee, task force, etc...
  • Private forums, which allow you to subscribe to a topic and recieve PM's or emails when there's a new post to a topic of interest.
  • A Document & Downloads Library - A shared, categorized, and searchable library where members can post documents, images, videos, presentations, and even complete programs. Upload files from your PC, link to them from another site, or import them from another server!
  • A Forensic Community Events Calendar - members can submit and manage events to the group calendar.
  • The ability to submit industry "News Flashes" (news blurbs), each of which can be made available to the public or only to registered members.
  • The Media-Geek Wiki! Our Wiki is accessible to registered members only, providing a secure place for members to collaborate on forensic related documentation, etc... Included in the Wiki is a detailed listing of proprietary DVR file extensions & codecs, as well as information on accessing the related players/viewers.
  • A complete membership directory.
  • Comprehensive Search Tools to locate content from any section or area of the site, to include articles, news, event listings, member forums, document library, and the video library...all through one site search form!
  • Quick & easy access to the FVA FTP site and the FVA Listserv.
  • And we're working on more!
